Why finishes fail

Most stain jobs do not last. Here is why

A finish that peels within a year usually comes down to one of four things, and every one is avoidable.

  • The wrong product

    Box-store stain sits on top of the wood instead of soaking in. It looks fine for a season, then flakes. Professional-grade product penetrates the grain and holds for years.

  • Sprayed, not brushed

    Spraying is fast, but it lays product on the surface instead of working it into the wood. The bond gives out the first hot or wet stretch of weather.

  • Prep got skipped

    New stain over dirt or an old finish bonds to the wrong thing. Within a year it peels off, taking whatever was underneath with it. Prep is most of the job.

  • Moisture ignored

    Wood that is too wet will not take stain, and wood too dry pulls the moisture out of it. Skip the moisture check and the finish is compromised before the first coat.

Most local crews spray on stain to finish a job fast. We brush wood by hand, because that is what makes a finish actually last. The stain works into the grain instead of sitting on top of it, and that is the difference between a deck or fence you enjoy for years and one that is peeling next summer.

How it works

From first call to finished project

No pressure, no surprises. Here is what to expect.

Free estimate

Tell us about your project. We come take a look, talk through what you want, and write up a real quote within a couple of days.

Prep and finish

Clean, sand, repair as needed, then apply the right stain or sealer for the surface. We do the work by hand and we do not skip steps.

Walkthrough

We walk the finished job with you, mark anything you want touched up, and come back within a week to handle it. Then we are done.
